Described as ‘the most important Aston Martin ever produced’, the 1956 DBR1 is likely to become the most expensive British car ever when it goes under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s flagship Monterey sale. The auction is scheduled for August 18 and 19 during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance motoring week in the US.
The 1956 racer, which is chassis number one of just five made, is said to attract bids of over £15 million ($20 million) from wealthy connoisseurs. This is closer to the £17 million ($21.7 million) mark of the previously sold 1955 Jaguar D-Type that sold at the same auction last year and currently holds the record for the priciest motor sale at an auction in Britain.
The car is described as Aston’s ‘equivalent to the Ferrari 250 GTO and the similarities between the two are undeniable. Both vehicles are built to dominate on the track with the DBR1 making its debut at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1956.
Preserved in pristine condition, the svelte frame of the legendary model hides a 3.0-litre straight-six engine packing around 250bhp. In 1959, that was enough to shame all the competition at the Nurburgring 1,000 KM race.
This is the first time a DBR1 has ever been made available to the public, so there is already a long line of potential buyers who are eager to own this historical piece. The fact it is chassis number 1 makes this model the most enticing for fans of classic British cars.

Corum‘s iconic Golden Bridge watch debuted in 1980 in its original barrel-shaped case. Last year, the Swiss watchmaker introduced a redesigned version in a more traditional round case. At this year’s Baselworld fair, Corum revealed another variation of its signature Golden Bridge, in a new, Art Deco-influenced rectangular case.
The Corum Golden Bridge Rectangle, like its round-cased predecessor has been designed by Dino Modolo. It boasts an eye-catching baguette-shaped, linear-oriented, manual-winding movement, Caliber CO113. The movement is designed to be visible in the center of the open dial with a high level of engraving and finishes on its 18k gold bridges and plate. It is surrounded on both sides by 18k gold elements that represent six Roman numerals whose curved shapes and rivets resemble the intricate architecture of a bridge. The movement’s timekeeping functions are on full display. The spring barrel at 6 o’clock feeds energy to the escapement at 12 o’clock. Caliber CO113 has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and a power reserve of 40 hours.
The curved rectangular case sports a grooved winding crown at the bottom – a hallmark feature of Corum’s Bridges collection. Both are made of 5N 18k rose gold and measure 29.5 mm by 42.2 mm. The baton-shaped hour and minute hands are rhodium-plated and faceted. Both the front and back of the watch are covered with nonreflective sapphire crystals. The watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The strap is made of brown alligator leather with a triple-folding clasp made of rose gold. The price for the new Corum Golden Bridge Rectangle is $36,900.
Arcadia’s new 85S yacht is a next generation vessel equipped with solar panels, a winter garden, and a convertible sky deck. The brand Arcadia Yachts launched in 2010 with a new vision for yachting. The idea behind its concepts is to focus more on the functionality of design and eco-friendly technology that maximises the performance capabilities of yachts.
The new 85S is a bespoke representation of the brand’s ethos with its low-key profile and impeccable craftsmanship. It enhances the on-board experience for owners and guests. More than 1,000 square feet of living space is arranged in large, open-plan areas to make the new 85S volume greater than most 85-footers. The spaces include a winter garden, 28-foot-long aft cockpit, open-plan saloon with a spacious dining area, and a sky deck that can transform into an enclosed area with the push of a button.
The 85S is an updated version of the original 85. It has multiple upgrades, including electric solar panels, many fitted inside the double-glazed panels of the windows. Automatic blinds on the side windows and skylights provide privacy in port. Arcadia’s solar panels are next generation with lithium batteries and provide 3.5 kilowatts to run house systems, including fridges, water pumps, WCs, lights, audio/video, and electronics while the batteries recharge. The need for air conditioning is minimal thanks to a cool-air flow system achieved through sizable openings in the winter garden and large skylights.
The 85’s most spectacular innovation is the sky deck. It has a hard top and side windows that open or close. It ca serve as an open bridge or, during inclement weather, a completely enclosed space. This essentially adds a third deck with the push of a button.

Arcadia 85S will make its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The company promises 30 to 50 percent lower fuel consumption than similar-sized yachts. The 730 hp MAN diesel engines gives 18 knots, with a cruising speed of 16 knots. At 12 knots, it has a range of 850 nautical miles.
